CAD Cores Explained: What a Geometry Kernel Actually Does
Why geometric modeling kernels, B-rep topology, and model history matter for reliable design and AI-enabled CAD.
The engine beneath the CAD interface
A CAD modeling kernel computes the geometry and topology of parts: solids, surfaces, intersections, Boolean operations, offsets, fillets, shells and related geometric queries. The user interface and feature tree belong to the CAD application; a kernel is the mathematical and topological foundation that makes many modeling operations possible.
B-rep is more than a mesh
Boundary representation, or B-rep, describes a solid using faces, edges, vertices and their relationships. Surfaces may be analytic or based on NURBS. A tessellated mesh is useful for visualization and many analyses, but a mesh alone typically does not preserve all the exact surfaces, constraints or editable design intent of a feature-based CAD model.
Parasolid, ACIS and Open CASCADE
Parasolid is a commercial kernel used by multiple major CAD products. ACIS is another commercial modeling kernel. Open CASCADE Technology is an open-source geometry and topology platform used in engineering applications. Their capabilities, licenses, data-exchange tools and failure modes differ; choosing one does not automatically provide a complete parametric CAD system.
Why files still fail between CAD systems
Neutral formats can transfer useful geometry but may not retain native feature history, constraints or stable face identifiers. Imported surfaces may require repair because of tolerance differences or inconsistent topology. Conversion quality matters before tolerance analysis, manufacturing planning or automated feature recognition.
What AI adds — and what it does not
AI can translate natural-language requests into feature operations, identify likely geometric intent, or suggest repairs. But it still needs a geometry engine to execute valid operations. Reliable AI-CAD also needs precise evaluation, reproducible feature history, and checks for manufacturability or downstream geometry breakage.
Practical questions before buying a CAD platform
Ask which kernel and translators it uses; whether it can preserve or reconstruct design intent; how failures are surfaced; which STEP, Parasolid or native formats can be validated; and how revisions affect topology, references and engineering measurements.
Exact B-rep geometry answers what the object is; feature history helps answer why it was designed that way.
